To understand why installation of a lining carpet under a soft tile is necessary, you first need to understand how this type of roof is arranged and what place a lining carpet occupies in it.
The carpet is made in the form of a roll material with water-repellent properties. The main function of the lining carpet is to prevent roof leakage. Most often, the lining consists of a bitumen base with the addition of fiberglass or polyester fabric.
It is also possible to use fine quartz sand, which is a protective outer layer. During installation, the carpet is laid with an abrasive coating up. The lower part of the membrane can be equipped with adhesive film.
To understand the place of the lining carpet in the general puff structure of the roof, we list the layers from the finishing surface to the base:
- Flexible tile.
- Lining membrane.
- Solid flooring from boards or OSB.
- Waterproofing layer.
- Mineral wool insulation or from polystyrene foam boards.
- Lathing and rafter base.
- Vapor barrier.
Installation of all these layers ensures the reliability and durability of the roofing.
Why is it needed and is it necessary to use it
Having studied the structure of the material, we will understand why a lining carpet for flexible tiles is needed.
Flexible tile looks attractive, perfectly protects the surface from precipitation, easy to install and affordable. Therefore, homeowners are increasingly using it for roofing. But to ensure the long life of the bitumen coating, it is necessary to prepare a reliable base resembling a layer cake. The penultimate layer of this cake will be the lining carpet.
When installing a soft roof, this material is mandatory for use regardless of the bevel angle of the rafters. But the angle of inclination still matters.
In some cases, when the angle of inclination of the roof starts from 45 degrees, continuous laying of the membrane is not necessary. It is enough to strengthen the valleys, the ridge and the perimeter of the roof. But savings often lead to predictable consequences. Even slight damage to the finish leads to leaks. The wooden base of the roof begins to rot, fungus and mold appear.
The service life of such coverage is reduced by several times, and repair work will require significant financial investments. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations when installing a specific type of soft roof.
Lining carpet is laid to achieve the following goals:
- waterproofing the wooden base of the roof;
- leveling the surface under the flooring of flexible tiles.
An additional waterproofing lining saves the base of the roof from leaks due to damage or deformation of flexible tiles as a result of temperature fluctuations.
In addition to providing waterproofing, the lining performs the function of additionally sealing the places of contact of coatings (joints of slopes, holes for mounting ventilation fungi and the exit of chimneys).
In some cases soft roofing without lining is not allowed. Most manufacturers of materials for soft roofs indicate in the instructions for laying a lining carpet under soft tiles that at an angle of inclination up to 18 degrees It is required to completely cover the surface of the roof with a lining. There is also a roof when tilted over 60 degrees.
Which lining carpet to choose
The same organizations that produce soft roofs are engaged in the production of lining material. Therefore, when deciding which lining carpet is better for flexible tiles, it is recommended to choose materials from the same manufacturer. They are designed to work together in temperature extremes and protect the base more reliably.
Standard roll lining material measures:
- width 1 000 mm;
- length 15,000 mm.
Distinguish products by the type of fixation to a solid base. To choose the right lining membrane option, you need to consider all types of this material.
Types and selection criteria
There are four types of backing material:
- Standard. No adhesive is applied to this roll material, so it is attached to a wooden base using galvanized roofing nails with a large hat or metal staples with a stapler. Lay separate strips of lining with an overlap of 150 mm with obligatory sizing of the junction of bitumen mastic.
- Combined. In this case, the upper part of the canvas is fixed with nails or staples, and the lower, having an adhesive strip, is glued to the base. The adhesive strip is covered with a thin plastic film, which is easily removed during installation. If necessary, the joints of the paintings are additionally fixed with nails.
- Self-adhesive cloth. This lining adheres to the base over the entire area. Adhesive bonding is more reliable compared to previous types of coatings, but the technology of mounting a self-adhesive cloth is more complicated. It is necessary to smooth the strips in a quality manner so that no air pockets form inside the coating. At the joints of individual strips, as well as around the perimeter of the roofing carpet, it is recommended that they be fixed with nails. This type of material allows you to create a one-piece carpet that protects the roof from moisture. When mounting self-adhesive cloths in the winter, rolls should be warmed up, since the cold hinders the normal adhesion of the adhesive composition and wood.
- Surfaced web. To install this lining, a gas burner is required. The lower part of the material is impregnated with bitumen, which is heated for tight fixation to the base. Surfaced carpets can be laid on a concrete and wooden surface, in both cases reliable adhesion occurs. The roof of the deposited material is obtained as a single sheet, preventing the penetration of moisture. When working with surfaced linings, you must strictly adhere to fire safety techniques, so only experienced builders are allowed to work.
When preparing a complex roof with multiple fractures, it is recommended to use various types of lining membranes. Wide, flat surfaces are best covered with self-adhesive materials. For processing joints, standard products are used with fixing on nails and additional coating over the entire area of the base with bituminous mastic.
Before starting work, when choosing a material grade, it is necessary to study the manufacturer's recommendations on the use of a specific type of lining.
Popular manufacturers
Katepal. Leveling and waterproofing gasket. Production: Finland. It is made in two versions: standard, with fastening on nails or staples, and as self-adhesive cloths.
Ruflex Lining membrane with fixation on self-tapping screws or bitumen mastic. Production: Russia.
TechnoNikol. The trademark most widely represented in the domestic market. Production: Russia. Under the Technonikol brand, all types of lining membranes are made for any canopies and roofs. The most popular carpets include products developed together with engineers from Spain under the soft tiles of Shinglas: ANDEREP PROF, ANDEREP BARRIER, ANDEREP GL PLUS.

How to lay a lining carpet
Laying technology provides for several stages of work.
Training. Before laying the lining membrane, you need to prepare the base. The basis for a flexible tile is a continuous wooden crate or a completely closed roof surface using OSB or moisture-proof plywood.
In a continuous crate, ventilation gaps between boards or sheets of plywood of 2-3 mm are necessarily arranged.
Laying material in the valley. After preparing the foundation, proceed to carpet flooring in the valley. The whole cloth strip is laid so that equal stripes lie on the right and left side of the valley.
When covering the endow, alignment of the edges from the middle should be achieved. If the roll width is 1000 mm, then 500 mm of the gasket should be glued on each side.
Lining on the overhang and the ends. If the installation of a lining carpet is not complete, the next step is to lay the membranes along the eaves and over the ends of the roof. Fully seal the departure width plus 600 mm deep into the roof. When flooring on the eaves, 20 mm recede from the edge of its inflection.
Laying at ventilation and furnace openings. Next, they begin to protect the base around the ventilation holes, a cutout for the chimney and dormers.
Laying is finishing. After processing all the complex joints and holes, they begin to lay the material over the entire surface of the roof. The strips are laid from the bottom up parallel to the ground with an overlap of 100-150 mm. When fixing the canvas to the nails, a pitch of 200 mm is observed. The joints of the paintings must be sealed with bituminous mastic or a special adhesive. The flooring of the material on the ridge is carried out at the last stage.
